Pastels by KATHLEEN HOFF-HARVEY
Growing up in western Kansas (native of Hays), I was surrounded by a landscape of extremes . . . a level horizon stretching out forever . . . fields of wheat and prairie grass . . . an immense sky displaying an ever-changing vista of clouds, storms, sunrises, sunsets . . . the zen-like quality of the sparseness of trees and hills . . . the omnipresent wind . . . the changing of the seasons . . . inspired by this amazing environment . . . the patterns, colors, rhythms . . . I also find inspiration in many modern painters including Van Gogh and the pastelist Wolf Kahn.
I discovered pastel five years ago at a Lawrence Art Center workshop. Since then I have shown my art in several regional exhibits, winning an award at the Wichita Midwest Garden Show as well as a Kansas Arts Commission Mini–Fellowship (2004.)
I've employed at the Blue Heron Furniture Store for the past seven plus years, where I am a merchandiser/buyer/ interior design consultant. I reside in Lawrence with my husband, Doug.
What is pastel?
Pastel is a pure pigment. It’s the same pigment used in making oil and watercolor paints, but it retains its brilliance and luminosity because it’s a dry medium.
Pastel paintings will last at least as long as oils, and will retain their fresh color for hundreds of years, as long as they’re done on an archival, acid-free surface.
